In wind events, powerlines can topple causing new fires and existing fires can be fanned into fast storms of embers. Fast fires cause 88 percent of home loss. Research show you can protect your home, keep your insurance and help firefighters before fire comes by taking simple steps to prepare your home and yard:
• Put ember resistant screens on all crawl space and attic vents
• Remove vegetation and wood fences within 5' from house
• Clean gutters, replace bark mulch with fire-safe rock, gravel
Many of these changes are simple, and while they are low cost many people still need help to do them. This bill will provide expert assessments and the funding to help Oregonians take these necessary steps. This bill creates a permanent fund, the interest from which will be used to pay for the changes.
